During combustion, natural gas releases much less carbon dioxide than coal – only about half of that from coal-fired power plants, and the emissions of other pollutants are even more negligible. Natural gas generators start and stop quickly, perfectly matching the intermittent characteristics of wind and photovoltaic power, making the grid more receptive to fluctuating renewable energy. It is like an indispensable ferry on the river of energy transition, safely transporting us from the coal era on this shore to the future of renewable energy.
